Newly Enlisted? Start Strong.

Thank you for your service! As a newly enlisted service member, one of the first steps to financial stability is setting up your banking foundation.

After opening your account with Tyndall, enroll in Direct Deposit to ensure your military pay is delivered securely and on time. Set up automatic payments for recurring bills like your phone, car loan, or insurance so you never miss a due date, even during training or deployment.

Before You Deploy

Set Up Account Access

Enroll in Online and Mobile Banking, set up account alerts (low balance, withdrawals, fraud alerts), and confirm your contact information is current.

Automate Your Finances

Schedule automatic bill payments, set up automatic transfers, and enroll in Direct Deposit (if not already).

Review Your Budget

Review your budget to account for any changes in income, expenses, or benefits.

Grant Account Access with a Power of Attorney (POA)

A Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document that allows someone you trust to act on your behalf for financial matters. Military legal assistance offices can help you create a POA before deployment.

Notify Your Credit Union

Let your credit union know your deployment dates and countries in advance by updating travel notifications and setting up real-time transaction alerts in your cards app. Ensure your email and phone number are current.

Review Insurance & Beneficiaries

Update life insurance, ensure you have beneficiaries on all accounts, and review your auto insurance if your vehicle won’t be used.

Using Your Visa® Card Overseas

Accepted in Over 200 Countries and Territories

Look for the Visa logo before making a purchase. When you make a purchase the merchant charges you in the local currency. Visa processes the transaction, and the amount is converted to U.S. dollars. The final USD amount posts to your account. You’ll see the original foreign amount, the exchange rate applied, and any foreign transaction fee (if applicable).

Manage Travel in your Tyndall Cards App

You can update travel notifications in your Tyndall Cards app so your card will not be declined or blocked. Before you deploy, provide the countries you’ll be visiting, a reliable email address, and an international contact number (if available).

Withdrawing Cash Overseas

Withdrawing local currency from an ATM is often the simplest option. Insert your Visa debit card and select the amount in local currency. The ATM dispenses local cash, and Visa converts the withdrawal into USD.

Know your daily withdrawal limit before you deploy.

On-Base vs. Off-Base Usage

On Base, USD is typically accepted and processes card transactions like U.S. transactions. Off Base, expect local currency pricing, exchange rate fluctuations and occasional card network outages, and cash-only merchants in smaller towns/rural areas. Always carry a small amount of local currency as backup.

Destress your PCS

Relocation is a regular part of military life, but every move comes with financial decisions. Whether you’re heading across the country or overseas, planning ahead can reduce stress, prevent unexpected expenses, and keep your finances mission-ready.

A PCS is more than a change of address, it’s a major life transition. Our team understands military relocation and is ready to help.

Before You Move

Confirm your report date, understand your authorized travel days and determine eligibility for Dislocation Allowance (DLA).

Build a Budget

Even with reimbursements, PCS moves often involve out-of-pocket expenses. Set aside funds to cover expenses until reimbursements are processed.

Determine Housing at Your New Duty Station

If living off-base, you will need to determine if you will be renting or purchasing a home. Our Tyndall team is here to help answer any of your mortgage questions, even before you relocate.

Protecting Your Credit During a Move

PCS transitions can lead to missed bills if not managed carefully. Keep auto-pay active during travel, monitor accounts, set up low-balance alerts, and forward mail to avoid missed statements.

What’s the best way to manage my finances during deployment?

Set up Direct deposit, Automatic bill payments, Account alerts, and Online and Mobile Banking.

Automatic payments help prevent missed payments while your schedule or connectivity may be limited.

Should I notify Tyndall before deployment or PCS?

Yes. Providing your travel dates and duty location helps prevent card declines and fraud alerts. It also ensures we have the right contact information while you’re away.

Do I need a Power of Attorney (POA) before deploying?

It’s strongly recommended. A POA allows someone you trust to manage financial matters on your behalf if needed. A POA allows legal authority, but debit cards or account access may require additional steps or joint account arrangements for someone to have access to your account.

Will my debit or credit card work overseas?

In most cases, yes. Visa® is widely accepted internationally. However, some restricted or sanctioned countries may block transactions.  It is a good idea to have local currency in addition to your card.

Are there extra fees for international purchases?

You may see:

  • A foreign transaction fee (0–3%, depending on your card)
  • ATM operator fees for cash withdrawals

Check your card’s fee schedule before traveling.

How does currency conversion work?

Your purchase is made in local currency. Visa converts it to U.S. dollars using the exchange rate at the time the transaction is processed.
